RuneScape – April 2023 Patch Notes | Enhance Your Account Security Now!

Introduction

HOW-TO JAGEX ACCOUNTS

Account security is a major concern for players and a core focus for us. The current system has reached the end of the road as our security solution. The new Jagex Account system will let us provide you with increased security, stability, and sustainability using modern, industry-standard technology. We’ll be able to keep bringing you more RuneScape for years to come without you worrying that your hard-earned stats and equipment will fall into the hands of hackers.

Jagex Accounts will use a different multi-factor authentication (MFA) integration to current RuneScape Accounts. When setting up MFA for your Jagex Account, you’ll be provided with 10 backup codes to use as your second factor if you lose access to your authenticator device. These codes will only be shown once and can only be used once each – so be sure to record them safely and securely!

To import a character to a Jagex Account, you’ll log in to that character and enter your authenticator details as usual. Once a character has been imported, the MFA for the associated RuneScape Account will no longer work – you’ll need to use the MFA associated with your Jagex Account.

You can still play multiple characters at once and make progress simultaneously, assuming all those characters are linked to your Jagex Account.

In short, the Jagex Account and Launcher is how we’re going to provide you with strong, modern account security – as well as an easier way to log in and manage multiple characters!

As an additional reminder make sure you always set up multi-factor authentication on your email account too. This remains a vulnerability for a number of players and is part of what makes the additional security measures offered by Jagex Accounts a necessity. It’s also worth noting that while email authentication is an option for you to sign in to your Jagex Account, making use of an authenticator app is highly recommended as best practice when it comes to security.

HOW TO: UPGRADING TO A JAGEX ACCOUNT

This bit of the blog is mainly for those who have been invited to upgrade to a Jagex Account. We’ve prepared a handy how-to video that shows you:

NEXT STEPS: UNWELCOME GUESTS

The Fort has been built and the celebrations went as well as could be expected, now it is time to start tackling the next stage of the Fort Forinthry Season and address the dangers of the wilderness and beef up your Slayer skills. Here is what you can expect from these Unwelcome Guests.

  • Defend Fort Forinthry in a lengthy mini-quest featuring your new Slayer Master, The Raptor!
  • Complete Slayer Tasks at almost any level and build the new Guardhouse for Slayer bonuses anywhere!
  • Thematically expand your Fort’s security with new fortifications and guards.

WHO INVITED THESE GUYS?

After throwing a killer banquet to celebrate your recent dukedom it has come to the attention of some of the locals that things are a little … defensively lacking in Fort Forinthry. Even worse, there seems to be a growing number of undead cropping up just outside the walls. This just won’t do! It is time to clean house and remove all of these Unwelcome Guests from the immediate area.

WE’RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER WEAPON.

Kicking things off: A mini-quest where you team up with the Raptor? Sending the undead horde that has been congregating on your doorstep back to the grave? Sign me up!

After marching right into the Fort (another security concern) the Raptor tasks you with not only slaying the local undead but also dealing with the new more dangerous post-life monstrosities that are popping up.

We also need to get to the bottom of what is causing this surge of the restless undead. To handle this we are going to need to reinforce our defensive perimeter, hire some badass guards and get our slayer gear in order.

THIS IS MY BOOMSTICK

That’s right folks, the next Update in the Fort Forinthry Season is centred around Slayer!

New Slayer monsters have appeared around the Fort and it is up to you to decimate the ghouls & ghosts that dared step foot on your doorstep. The Raptor will reluctantly be there to direct you – and the new Fort Guards – in resolving this issue, including setting up the all-new Guardhouse!

You will find challenges for all levels of Slayers from the freshly raised Zombies to nasty Skeletons and Ghosts up to the terrifying Armoured Phantoms.

Alongside this update, there will be some updates to Slayer and combat in general, such as updating Slayer categories to include more undead minions (like Skeletal Wyvens) and making it so the Salve Amulet is no longer restricted in the Barrows. Check out our patch notes on Tuesday April 11th when the launch is live!

REWARDS

With the Raptor setting up shop in your Guardhouse you are primed to study the nuance of bashing monsters and understanding it on a new level.

Building Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3
Guardhouse +1% damage dealt on slayer task, doubled on undead tasks.
2% increased Elite mob spawn chance
Slightly (5%) increased ushabti capture rate.
4%* Increased Elite mob spawn chance
Ultimate abilities have a 3% chance to execute non-boss slayer targets.
Does NOT apply to damage-boosting ultimate bleed (i.e. Deaths Swiftness, Sunshine)
10% increased damage vs slayer targets below 25% hp.
6%* increased elite mob spawn chance

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck… then it’s a duck. So the Raptor despite his protests is a Slayer Master and comes with special Slayer Challenges, just like other Slayer Masters.

Completing these challenges will net you even more bonuses! You’ll be able to access these challenges as you complete tasks for the Raptor and – once complete – you can hang the trophies up in your Guardhouse when you have the appropriate Slayer levels to gain the buffs.

Challenge 1 – 30 Slayer Challenge 2 – 50 Slayer Challenge 3 – 90 Slayer
Slayer challenge 5% Increased slayer points from completing Raptor tasks (Or scale more with level) 10%* Increased slayer points from completing Raptor tasks (Or scale more with level)

Toggle to change the default Raptor slayer task length

15%* Increased slayer points from Raptor tasks (Or scale more with level)

Bone fragments will drop from enemies during Raptor tasks that can be traded in for some extra Slayer experience

*does not stack with similar bonuses from prior tiers/challenges

Finally with new monsters comes new loot as well – and both the New Ghost and Phantom monsters will be able to drop a “Greater Sonic Wave Ability Codex”. You do not need to be on task for this to drop!

For those of you that have the Greater Chain ability upgrade unlocked (with a side of Caroming perhaps?), you’ll be able to combo it in AOE situations with Greater Sonic Wave to gain a huge chunk of damage for a short period of time. Tasty.

Greater Sonic Wave

    • Basic Ability
      • 5 second CD
      • 40%-160% ability damage.
      • Gain 6% accuracy on your next ability.
      • Gain +100 ability damage for 4.2 seconds.
      • Requires 75 Magic

ABOUT RUNESCAPE: UNTOLD TALES OF THE GOD WARS!

The history of Gielinor is long and much has been lost to the ages, or even wiped from the annals of time. But in a busy tavern, within a bustling city, a mysterious hooded figure sits by the fire with a story on his lips…

Releasing later this year, the four-part comic series RuneScape: Untold Tales of the Godwars will delve into the Temple of Lost Ancients during the catastrophic and iconic God Wars, as four warring armies fight for control of the Godsword: a weapon capable of killing a deity.

Trapped in the centre of the conflict is the undead Maro, who dreams of breaking free of his master’s clutches. But escaping from the necromancer leads to a twisting, thrilling journey for Maro when he finds allies – and enemies – across the front lines.

HOW DO I GET MY HANDS ON A COPY AGAIN?

Use the Official Free Comic Book Day Store Locator to find a list of participating shops close to you. Simply input your postcode or zipcode and hit enter, and the Locator will generate a list of comic shops near you that are participating.

Note: FCBD generally only operates in English speaking countries, so unfortunately not everyone will be able to get their hands on this free issue. However, the full series of four comic books slated to release later in the year and the Graphic Novel coming in 2024 will be distributed globally (in English) – so you should be able to get your hands on an RS comic at some point, even if there is no participating store near you for FCBD.

NECROMANCY

IT’S HAPPENING.GIF

On May 30th, we’ll finally be giving you your first-ever look at Necromancy! (We had to bold this because we’re still not over the fact we finally get to talk about it).

In our first look video, debuting live on YouTube, the team behind our latest Skill will unveil the core pillars of the Necromancy Skill experience alongside some first-ever gameplay. The next day, we’ll be bringing together a panel of developers to join us on Twitch for a chat about what you’ve seen so far and answer some top questions from the reveal.

After that first look, we’ll be giving you even deeper looks inside Necromancy as development of the Skill enters its closing phases. Our goal leading up to release is to give you the most detailed look at a new Skill ever – but balanced with enough secrecy to make sure the day one experience remains special.

For the eagle eyed among you, you may notice we did add one little tidbit in the Development Update – not only will you be getting a fully fledged complete new Skill later this year, but Necromancy’s launch will also begin a whole new Season of content themed around Necromancy. We’re really excited to build on the learnings of our Content Seasons to deliver even more Necromancy goodness beyond the release of the Skill.

FORT FORINTHRY

Speaking of Seasonal Content, it’s been a blast watching you all living your best Duke/Duchess/Duxe life lately in Fort Forinthry. There are still two more big moments to come in the Fort Forinthry Season, with the first of the two arriving in June.

WOODCUTTERS’ GROVE

Woodcutting is finally getting some love! Venture back to Fort Forinthry to establish a new Woodcutting training area, upgrade your Fort with a new Woodcutting bonus-laden building, and – in particular spicy news! – a brand new T80 Hatchet to go earn. We’ll also be making some balancing improvements to the Woodcutting experience alongside the update too.

DEAD AND BURIED

Get ready for a new Quest with even more Fort Upgrades and some storyline revelations.

While the Fort Forinthry Content Season will be coming to a close after these two Content Updates, Fort Forinthry still has stories yet untold. You won’t need to have completed the Fort Forinthry Season to play Necromancy, but we do recommend starting your Fort-building adventure so you’re ready for what’s to come in the future!

MAX CASH LIMIT CHANGES

Following our Death Cost reductions earlier this year, we’re now almost ready to release the much-awaited change to enable Max Cash to go above the current limit of 2.14b!

Expect to see it this May.

ACTING ON COMMUNITY FEEDBACK

As a team, we’ve been looking to improve on how we bring more of your voice into our development – whether that’s post-release or pre-release. As a first step in this direction, we recently had three major opportunities to made your voice heard, and we’re going to have more updates on all three topics in the coming months.

FSOA & ANIMATE DEAD BALANCE BETA

Firstly, ‘Scapers, you rocked this. Thank you to everyone who provided such constructive, detailed thoughts in response to the changes – the care you put into those responses sparked plenty of conversations on where to go next and some bigger topics beyond (like PvM accessibility through tanking).

With your feedback, we’re looking to take a next step based on your comments while still ensuring we deliver some critical rebalancing to FSOA & Animate Dead. Building on all your great contributions, this time we want to take things one step further by letting you get hands on with these proposed changes for yourself.

On May 4th, we’ll be releasing Beta Worlds where you’ll be able to test out the proposed changes to FSOA & Animate Dead. All you’ll need to participate is your existing RuneScape account to copy over onto the server – though you’ll need to have FSOA and/or Animate Dead if you’re looking to playtest the changes.

Look out for more details on the revised changes and how to take part in the TWIR next Tuesday (due to the Spring Bank Holiday in the UK).

COMMUNITY HITLIST

We had thousands upon thousands of submissions to the Community Hitlist, where we asked you to tell us the biggest fixes, tweaks or changes you’d like to see come to RuneScape.

Our first Strike is taking shape, and we’re working on an Newspost to let you know what to expect ahead of it’s release in the coming months. We’ll also let you know any common suggestions that couldn’t make the cut for this first Strike, as well as anything we think needs further discussion. Expect many words!

COMP CAPE – TRIMMED REQUIREMENTS

The Completion Cape changes guided by you are now in the game, with a further vote taking place through our in-game poll to decide any potential additions to the Trimmed Comp Cape requirements. Expect to see a follow up to the results of the vote once it’s all completed.

We’ve been excited to work more closely with all of you on these upcoming updates and rest assured we’re working on the next opportunities to get more of your feedback into our development.

OTHER UPDATES & EVENTS

As the Fort Forinthry Season continues, we’ll also have some other events and updates coming to the game! As the teeny tiny text says on the Development Update image, there are also a few things we’re not quite ready to announce today also in the works – but here’s what we can share today:

  • Game Jam improvements, including the Karamja Graphical Updates!
  • Double XP on May 19th – 29th
  • The Beach in June

MORE STREAMS!

We’re being a little cheeky sneaking this one in as it’s not content-focused, but we wanted to let you know we’ll be returning to regular streaming in the coming weeks. Mod Doom will be taking the reins to keep the conversation flowing with you lovely lot, including some much awaited streams we’ve heard you wanted to see.

  • Deeper Discussions on Combat Topics
  • The return of Q&As!

We’ll also have some fun streams in the midst of those juicier conversations. Probably time for Mod Doom’s J-Mods vs Monsters rite of passage to begin, no?

CLOSING OUT

It’s such an exciting time to see Necromancy becoming more and more complete every Sprint Review that passes – as well as the many other updates we’re excited to get into your hands. We hope this has given you a solid look at much of what we’re cooking up over the next few months for Fort Forinthry and beyond!
