Greetings Helldivers,
Today, we want to talk about an upcoming change to our anti-cheat, answer some questions we have seen arise in the community around modding, and discuss how it may impact you as a player.
Fairness and honor have always been strong foundations for Helldivers in our fight in the Galactic War. But we have seen for too long that there are some who would bend the rules and definitions of fairness, affecting not only their own games but also the battles of those who play alongside them, affecting pick-up rates, and even going so far as to manipulate the war itself, breaking the unfolding story and dragging down innocent players with it.
We haven't previously commented on modding, other than to warn that from a technical perspective, we can’t guarantee their safety or usability for players. However, we feel that this change, considering what it affects, is giving us an opportunity to do so.
We know mods are part of the DNA of PC gaming and gaming communities as a whole. In general, we appreciate the creativity behind cosmetic and non-gameplay mods, which players can enjoy without negatively impacting those who play alongside them. Where we need to improve is how we protect players against modifications that create unfair advantages or negatively impact others, which goes beyond software manipulation to tamper with our game.
As a stepping stone on this journey, we are doing two things:
Implementing additional security measures to crack down on recent cheat mods that have been circulating.
Transitioning from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat today, October 20th, with additional security tools in place to enhance its effectiveness and improve game integrity protection.
These changes mean that some mods, particularly the types that are affecting the experience of other players, may no longer function. It also means that some non-malicious cosmetic mods may require updates from their individual creators in order to keep working.
We believe these are steps in the right direction, and we want to remain transparent about our decisions and intentions as we continue to improve the integrity and security of the game, to give players a consistent and fair experience, and to strengthen trust with our dedicated community.
As always, we appreciate your continued feedback and support, Helldivers. See you on the battlefield.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why are you changing from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC)?
A. The implementation of GameGuard for HELLDIVERS 2 wasn't as effective as it could have been, and in the end we decided to take another path with EAC.
EAC is an industry standard used in over 200 games, and we believe this will be an effective way to protect the Galactic War and will better protect fair gameplay and the integrity of the game.
For more information about EAC, please visit their official support.
Q. My cosmetic mod stopped working–what do I do?
A. Occasionally, mods will no longer function after an update and modders may need to update their projects to ensure they continue working with our updates and patches.
If you feel EAC or another system is blocking a non-destructive mod or other software, we encourage you to reach out to our official support on Zendesk to let us know.
Q. How can I tell which mods are safe to use?
A. Using mods is done at your own discretion, and so we cannot determine what’s safe vs. unsafe to use.
Q. Does the implementation of EAC in HELLDIVERS 2 impose any new hardware requirements?
A. No, there are no changes in hardware requirements.
For the minimum required specifications for HELLDIVERS 2, please see our article on Zendesk.
Q. I play HELLDIVERS 2 on Steam Deck / Linux. Will I still be able to play?
A. Yes, you can still play. Steam Deck and Linux compatibility remains unchanged.
